In the modern & concrete street of Thamel, one shouldn’t miss the 170 years-old ‘Malla Kaalin’ masterpiece of Nepalese Richness. For the foodies, travellers and tourists questioning to enjoy lively few hours of 60s Nepal; tasting top-notch food with matching ambience and hospitality, the answer is Thamel House Restaurant. 

The ancestral family home was put to service by Late Hari Bhakta Shrestha, Narendra Man Singh Shrestha and Ghirendra Man Singh Shrestha 20 years ago from today. During its rise, Thamel House Restaurant had served not only customers consisting of 90% foreigners but also elites such as Prince of Netherlands (1997),Japanese and French Ministers. Concentration of foreigners induces manager Mr. Nripesh Shrestha to quote “We also catered foreigners’ marriage in Nepalese style. So, I never know who my next customer is. And that’s the real excitement of managing this restaurant”
11 different dishes in Newari and Nepali Sets of Lunch and Dinner trigger the customers. “Nepalese people prefer Newari sets whereas Foreigners prefer Nepali sets”, says Mr. Nripesh. Though sets can be personalized, one shouldn’t miss the Nepali set with usual Chuira, Anda Taareko, Baara, Aalu Taareko, Tori ko saag, Bori, Bhatmaas Taareko, Aalu Achar, Suruwa, Mo:mo along with  jaw dropping Harin dry meat, Sukuti Saadeko, Mutton Choyela, Chicken Sekuwa and Badel saadeko totaling 15. Food can be added per-person-per-plate if requested. For drink, the traditional Aaila or Chyang and for dessert, a self-made tangy yogurt “Shikarni” are served. So called Newari-Pizza, Chatamari, hot with Egg, Mutton and Chicken meat is a must try. Mr. Ramesh Shrestha, the main chef since its bud stage, is confident about no buff, no overproduction, neatness and freshness of food.
Refurbished each year, the wooden built restaurant has 3 major seating segments: Inside the house with around 100 seats, Balcony segment 50 and Garden area 40. The restaurant walls are adorned with ‘Lakhe’ masks focusing a static cultural look. Besides a welcoming environment any hour, the best time to visit is when you can enjoy diversified cultural programs including Tamang selo, Newari dances andJhakri dances every evening from 6 pm.
